The Promise Maker

A person's promises reflect his or her character.  Help the children learn about God and His character by studying some of the promises He has made to us.

Divide the children into small groups.  Select several promises from this List of Some of God's Promises and give each group a different promise.
Ask the children to read the promise and list the things they learn about God and His character by reading the verse.
Examples are included below.
Covenant with Abram.  Genesis 12:2, 3.  "I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.  I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you."  Genesis 12:7.  "The LORD appeared to Abram and said, 'To your offspring I will give this land.'  So he built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to him."
A child can learn from this verse that God is powerful, God is in control of and acts in His creation, God is loving, God is generous, God chooses people to work for his kingdom, God wants to bless all people, etc.
Deuteronomy 31:8 - "The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.  Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged."
A child can learn from this verse that God loves us, God is loyal, God is an encourager, God wants us to feel secure, etc.
James 1:5 - "If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him."
A child can learn from this verse that God is smart, God is generous, God does not play favorites, God answers prayers, God wants us to make wise choices, etc.
1 John 1:9 - "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."
A child can learn from this verse that God is forgiving, God wants us to admit our mistakes, God is holy, etc.
