Jesus Fed the 5,000

The following is a list of Bible Truths in John 6:1-14, the story of Jesus feeding the 5,000.

  1. Jesus knew the needs of His followers.  John 6:5.
  2. Jesus showed compassion for His followers when He took care of their needs.  John 6:5-6.
  3. The boy gave his lunch to Jesus and Jesus used it to feed 5,000 men.  John 6:9.
  4. Jesus showed His authority as God by feeding 5,000 men with 5 barley loaves and two fish.  John 6:9-11.
  5. Jesus gave thanks before He ate.  John 6:11.
  6. Jesus showed His generosity by giving more food than the people needed.  John 6:11-13.
  7. Jesus told His disciples not to waste food.  John 6:12.

The following activities can be used to teach the Bible story and truths.

Bible Story Activities.

What is God Like?  Use this activity to help the children understand the qualities of God.
Discuss the qualities of God.  Click here for a listing and description of the qualities of God.
Explain that Jesus has each of the qualities you discuss because Jesus is God.
Ask the children to listen for the qualities of God that Jesus shows in the story you will tell.
Ask the children to tell about the qualities Jesus showed.  For example.
Omniscience - He knew their needs.
Compassion and Love - He wanted to take care of their needs.
Omnipotence - He fed 5,000 men with 5 barley loaves and two fish.
Holiness and righteousness - He gave thanks and did not want to waste food.
Review Questions.  Ask these questions after you tell the story.

How did Jesus know the people were hungry?

Jesus is omniscient.  He knows all things.

Why did Jesus want to feed His followers?

Jesus loves His followers.  He is concerned for their needs and wants to help them.

What did Jesus do before he passed out the food for the people to eat?

He gave thanks.  John 6:11.

Why was Jesus able to feed 5,000 men with five barley loaves and two small fish?

He is omnipotent, or has unlimited powers.

What did Jesus tell the disciples to do after the people had enough to eat?

He told them to gather the pieces left over so there would be no waste.  John 6:12.

How many baskets of food were left over?

Twelve.  John 6:13.

Divide the class into groups and solve a Brain Teaser.
